• On November 16, 2023, the Institute for Global Public Policy (IGPP) hosted the 9th lecture of the Young Scholars Symposium. The symposium featured keynote presentations by Associate Professor Cai Jing from the School of Public Health at Fudan University, Associate Professor Xie Yang from the School of Economics and Management at Beihang University, and Assistant Professor Pan Yuhang from the Institute for Global Health Development at Peking University. The symposium was hosted by Assistant Professor Qian Haoqi from the IGPP. Ye Xin, Assistant professor of IGPP, served as discussant.

Professor Cai Jing gave a presentation on the topic of The Impact of Temperature and Temperature Variability on Reproductive Health. At the beginning of her report, Professor Cai first introduced the current situation of air pollution and climate change. She highlighted the disease burden and potential economic losses caused by air pollution, as well as the combined impact of climate change and air pollution on health. Professor Cai then discussed the main research conducted by her research team. Finally, she emphasized the importance of addressing both air pollution and climate change as crucial issues.

Professor Xie Yang presented on the topic of Assessment of the Health and Economic Impacts of Extreme Weather. Professor Xie began by introducing the situation of climate change and extreme weather events. Her research found that cold waves result in more deaths compared to heatwaves, with the greatest impact in the southwest region. In recent years, the impacts of heat waves have generally been greater than those of cold waves. Heatwave-related deaths have increased since 2010, while the mortality rate associated with cold waves has been decreasing.

Professor Pan Yuhang delivered a presentation on the topic of Climate Change and Hospital Workload: Evidence from China. Professor Pan approached the topic from the perspective of the healthcare system and examined the correlation between extreme temperatures and hospital workload using inpatient records from the emergency department. This study particularly emphasized the relationship between climate change and the burden faced by specific healthcare institutions.

Lastly, Professor Ye Xin provided commentson the presentations by the three speakers and summarized the policy implications and future research developments. She emphasized the importance of not only focusing on the health effects but also considering the economic impacts and sustainable development in the context of climate change. Professor Qian Haoqi presented commemorative gifts to the three speakers and took a group photo to commemorate the event. The lecture concluded successfully in a warm atmosphere.
